My colleague and friend Erico and I went to Brazil a few
years ago - he is from a city called Fortaleza.
One of the days I was
there we ended up driving a couple hours away through the sand dunes in the back
of an F150 pickup truck - just us following a dune buggy.
We almost drove off the side
of a huge dune.
We visited an amazing oasis in the middle of
the sand dunes with nothing but a beach, a lake, a cooler of beer, and a guy
renting a jet ski.
I asked him what the place was called.
"It is the Uruaú Lake. Natal is 400km southeast of Fortaleza... It's the same region as Natal and the beaches are very similar."
"Uruaú is much easier to say than Jericoacoara, another beach in the region."
It's pronounced:
oo-roo-ah-OO
"oo" as in good
"roo" as in root
"ah" as in Atlanta
I pronounce it Ur-ow.
An augmented reality heads-up
display (HUD) interface tailored to gesture interaction, using consumer hardware
like Microsoft Kinect or Nintendo
Wii controllers.
This type of natural interface
is especially suited to environments where physical interaction with a
diagnostic display is impractical and increases the chance of contamination.
The
Natural User Interface (NUI) becomes effectively invisible with repeated use
and
increased skill, allowing the medical practitioner to focus only on their
environment, their colleagues and the patient.
The system is part of a larger integrated database system where all patient data is available in digital form.
Some examples of patient data the interface includes are the following:
The ability to annotate medical images and video with text, voice recording, and drawing metadata assists with faster and more accurate diagnosis and information sharing.
The captured medical information can be collaborated on by a team of doctors using video conferencing and gestures to pass data back and forth, email, and print the information.
This can be done on location and in different offices with multiple mobile devices in near-realtime.
